Dr. Michael Stewart, DVM, 1984,
Graduate of Auburn University Vet School has worked
with lameness and rehabilitation on horses through
his race track vet practice, and has been applying
many of the same principals to his canine
rehabilitation since 1997 when he set up the
rehabilitation center in Windsor.
Dr. Stewart's philosophy on
Rehabilitation
After surgery or injury, all animals (people
included), limit the use of the afflicted joint or
area, this creates weakness and stiffness.
Rehabilitation strengthens muscles, increases the
range of motion and promotes the healing of injured
tissues.
A normally fit individual will support their
weight with their muscles. Bones and joints create
the framework for the muscles to function. Due to
age and/or injury weaknesses becomes a problem.
Locations of the body become weak and more of ones'
weight is placed on the bones and joints, thus
creating or accelerating arthritis and joint pain.
Rehabilitation and hydrotherapy reverse this trend
until strength is regained.
