Aqua
Therapy
Swimming allows an animal to stay physically fit on a
muscular and cardiovascular level without putting
stress on injured joints or tendons. Unlike horses
that are confined to a stall,
swimming horses stay quieter and are less likely to
reinjure themselves. Swimming creates a foundation
for the horse that allows them to resume an
appropriate training program after completing therapy.

Jacuzzi
The whirlpool promotes muscle relaxation and
prevents a "guarding response" in the
animal. By guarding, an animal will put excess
stress on the "good" limbs in order to
compensate for the "bad" limb. Relaxation
promotes healing and increases joint range of
motion.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
Ultrasound therapy is proven to increase cellular
activity and circulation in damaged muscles,
tendons, and ligaments. Results include a reduction in
muscle spasms and an increase in connective tissue
mobility. Ultrasound combined with stretching
exercises will elongate muscle and reduce restriction caused by scar tissue. |
Muscle/Massage Therapy
Manipulation of soft tissue eases stiffness,
promotes circulation and tissue drainage, and
provides muscle relaxation and pain relief. A
certified myotherapist assists in the evaluation of
new patients at River Meadow Farm. |
Treadmill
An incline treadmill is used to provide a
standardized exercise protocol to strengthen horses
during rehabilitation. The treadmill provides an appropriate level of stress that is beneficial to recovery without causing further damage. |
Corrective Exercises
Equines with asymmetrical movement create stresses
on their body during work. A horse with an
underlying injury will compensate for the pain by
putting more stress on another body part, which may
lead to further injuries over time. Once a problem
has been assessed, lunging and riding are used to
strengthen and balance a horse in motion. |
Corrective
Shoeing
Trimming and shoeing correctly is extremely
important in treating and preventing injuries. Dr.
Stewart approaches the constantly evolving area of
therapeutic shoeing with an open mind. His knowledge
and experience over the years, from working with the
leading authorities in this field has proven to be
beneficial to equine athletes. |
Electrical Stimulation
Electric stimulation is used therapeutically to
reduce pain, increase circulation, and promote
healing. Electrodes are applied directly to the
skin, and deliver low voltage intermittent
stimulation to the surface nerves of the skin.
Transmission of pain signals are blocked by the
release of endorphins, allowing healing. Electrical
stimulation is non-invasive, and can be used to
treat chronic or acute pain. Benefits include pain
relief, reduced post exercise soreness, reduced
edema, and improved muscle strength. Electrotherapy
is helpful in treating and preventing atrophy, joint
swelling, muscle weakness, and tendonitis. |
